Westmeath County Council is the sole local authority public service provider for Westmeath whose remit is to represent, lead, and serve local communities in the County of Westmeath.
It was established under the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898. It has its administrative headquarters in Mullingar and a network of offices at Athlone and Castlepollard, along with our various online facilities. The Council is mandated to deliver a diverse range of functions and services which can be broadly described under the headings of economic development, community development, provision of physical and social infrastructure, recreation and amenity services, and the enforcement of the planning and environmental regulatory framework.
The representative structure of the Council consists of 20 democratically elected members from Athlone Moate Municipal District and Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District who form Westmeath County Council. The Elected Members determine strategic policy and represent the general view of the citizens who elected them.
